Saturday June 15

We left today at 7:45 am heading to Gettysburg. However, as we were making our way to the cemetery, we were interrupted by the town’s 5K run, so the tour guide (Denny) came to us. He directed us through the town while taking about all of the rich history that occurred there. We stopped and saw different monuments and battle sites within the national park. Denny taught us the army formations (like the fishhook) and all about our Kansas history at the Battle of Gettysburg. We also found out that our tour guide was not a fan of Dan Sickle (Look him up!). Denny was very knowledgeable and had an answer for every question we came up with. Then, we ate lunch in Gettysburg (Friendly’s and Picket’s Buffet were delicious!) before departing for Philadelphia. These Kansans had never seen a traffic jam like the one we were caught in. There was people driving on the shoulders of the road and following a fire truck to get to their destination. After finally arriving in Philly, we found our way to the line to see the Independence Hall. After seeing where the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution were made, Marietta let us tour Philadelphia on our own, and all of the members said it was an interesting learning adventure. Most of the 4-Her’s got to experience eating genuine Philly Cheesesteak for dinner! After touring the city, we all met back up and got on the bus to head back to the hotel. Sadly, we have to wait to see the Liberty Bell until morning cause of traffic, but we’re all super excited for tomorrow and the rest of the week! At 9 pm, we had our reflections on the day. We discussed some plans for the next week and that we “can’t wear our daisy dukes!” (says the bus driver Tonya). Marietta asked us what we thought makes a good citizen? The group answered with: participation, respect, listening to both sides and compromising, self motivation, and taking action. We discussed how we are citizens of the world, the United States, Kansas, our counties, our towns, and of 4-H! After reflections, the group dispersed to go swim and hang out in the rooms!
